In-depth Discussion on "Good Laboratory Practice": SPs UNHAS Hosts Lab Manager from the University of Antwerp, Belgium
MAKASSAR, October 23 — Reliable molecular research depends not only on advanced laboratory equipment, but also on careful handling and attention to detail at every stage of the research process. This was the key message of a guest lecture hosted by the Graduate School of Hasanuddin University (SPs UNHAS) in a hybrid format at the Prof. Dr. Ir. Fachruddin Hall on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The session featured Natalie Van Houtte, Laboratory Manager at the Evolutionary Ecology Group, University of Antwerp, Belgium, and was moderated by Peter Lilly, Ph.D.
During the discussion, Natalie highlighted Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) as a foundation for research integrity, rather than simply a set of rules that laboratory personnel are expected to follow.
“Good Laboratory Practice is not just about following rules. It is the foundation for ensuring the integrity and accuracy of molecular research results,” Natalie explained.
She went on to discuss everyday laboratory practices that can have a significant impact on research quality. The use of personal protective equipment, risk assessments, activity logs, workspace cleanliness, and proper waste management all form part of an interconnected system designed to protect laboratory personnel and minimize the risk of contamination.
The same level of care is essential when handling samples. Natalie outlined the process from sample collection and labeling to preservation, processing, and reporting. Keeping accurate records at every stage allows researchers to trace how samples have been handled and helps maintain their quality through to the final analysis.
Quality control is another important step before samples proceed to further testing. Natalie discussed the use of instruments such as NanoDrop and Qubit to measure sample concentration and assess purity. These checks help researchers determine whether samples are suitable for subsequent molecular analyses.
For SPs UNHAS, the discussion was closely aligned with efforts to improve research quality and promote laboratory practices that meet international standards. This was also emphasized by Prof. Dr. Ir. Nadiarti Nurdin Kadir, M.Sc., Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs at SPs UNHAS, who attended the event on behalf of the Dean, Prof. Sukri Palutturi, S.K.M., M.Kes., Ph.D.
“The material presented today is highly relevant to UNHAS as we work to raise our laboratory standards to an international level, particularly in ensuring that every molecular research finding is supported by scientifically valid and accountable results,” she said.
The session highlighted that research quality depends not only on the final findings, but also on consistent procedures, accurate documentation, and careful sample management throughout the research process. Well-organized laboratory practices help researchers trace each stage of their work and provide a stronger basis for ensuring that research findings can be properly validated and accounted for.
