Hasanuddin University as the main organizer of the Postgraduate Program was inaugurated on September 10, 1956 by the first Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia, Drs. Moh. Hatta. However, the embryo of the Postgraduate Program began 34 years later (1980), when the Chancellor of Hasanuddin University, Prof. Dr. A. Amiruddin formed a Preparatory Committee for Postgraduate Education chaired by Prof.Dr. Ir Fachruddin. The task of the committee is to prepare for the opening of Postgraduate Education at the Masters (S2) level in order to meet the needs of lecturers in improving the teaching and learning process in tertiary institutions, as well as to meet regional and national development needs in Indonesia.
For the hard work of the committee, the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture finally issued Decree No. 325 / D / T / 1982, where Hasanuddin University was entrusted with opening Postgraduate Education in collaboration with the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) in the form of a Credit Earning Activities (KPK) program. At that time, there were four study programs offered, namely Agricultural Systems, Regional Planning and Development, Environmental Management and Economic Resources, while the Postgraduate Program was led by Prof.Dr.Ir Fachrudin as chairman and Dr. Sjamsuddin Rasjid, M.Sc ., as secretary.
Four years later, Hasanuddin University's Postgraduate Program was recognized as a Postgraduate Faculty based on Presidential Decree Number 52 of 1986 dated October 11, 1986, and confirmed by Prof.Dr. Fuad Hassan as the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, on December 9, 1986. Along with the inauguration of the Postgraduate Faculty, a cooperation agreement between Hasanuddin University and the Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB) regarding the Doctoral Program (S3) in Agricultural Sciences was also signed.
At that time, the Postgraduate Dean was transferred from Prof. Dr. Ir. Fachrudin who was appointed as Chancellor of Hasanuddin University became Prof.dr. Hardjoeno assisted by Dr. A. Karim Saleh as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr.Ir. Anna K. Pairunan as Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance and Dr. Syahruddin Kadir as Assistant Dean for Student Affairs. In this period the Postgraduate Faculty has graduated 5 Masters as the first alumni.
Four years after the Postgraduate Faculty was inaugurated, the Law on the National Education System and Government Regulation No. 30 of 1990 was issued by the Government, followed by Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0311/0/1991 dated 6 June 1991 concerning the Change of Postgraduate Faculties to Postgraduate Programs at all public universities and institutes in Indonesia, including the Postgraduate Program at Hasanuddin University.
In this period, the Postgraduate Study at Hasanuddin University was again held by Prof.dr. Hardjoeno, while the academic assistant position is held by Prof.Dr. A. Karim Saleh handed over to Dr.Ir. Mas\'ud Junus, M.Sc., because he was appointed as Dean of the Faculty of Economics while two other officials namely Dr.Ir. Anna K. Pairunan and Dr. Syahruddin Kadir, M.Sc. stay in position.
Then in 1992, after Prof.dr. Hardjoeno has completed his chairmanship, the Chair of the Postgraduate Program will then be held by Prof.Dr. Sumali Wiryowidagdo as Director and assisted by dr.A. Husni Tanra, Ph.D., as Assistant Director I and Dr. Syahruddin Kadir, M.Sc. as Assistant Director II. Four years later, Prof.dr. A. Husni Tanra Ph.D. promoted to Director and assisted by Prof.Dr.Ir. Ananto Yudono, M.Eng. as Assistant Director of Academic and Research, Dr. Hafied Cangara, M.Sc. as Assistant Director of Administration and Finance, and Dr. Syahruddin Kadir, M.Sc. as Assistant Director of Cooperation and Development.
In 2002 the Postgraduate Chair was held by Prof.Dr.Ir.M.Natsir Nessa, MS., as Director, assisted by Prof.Dr.Sumarwati Kramadibrata Poli, M.Lit. as Assistant Director for Academic Affairs and Prof.Dr.Aminuddin Salle, SH, MH. as Assistant Director of Administration, Finance and Cooperation. In the middle of 2004, the Assistant Director of Administration and Finance was replaced, which was then entrusted to Dr.Ir. Thamrin Idris, MS replaced Prof.Dr. Aminuddin Salle, SH., MH. Yang was promoted to become Coordinator of Region IX Private Higher Education.
Since July 2006 the Head of the Postgraduate Program has been held by Prof.Dr.dr.A.Razak Taha, M.Sc. as Director and assisted by Prof. Dr. Sumarwati Kramadibrata Poli, M.Lit. as Assistant Director for Academic Affairs and Prof.Dr.Ir.Basit Wello, M.Sc. as Assistant Director of Administration, Finance and Cooperation. In May 2007, Assistant Director III was formed as Quality Assurance, Monitoring and Evaluation, Student Development and Alumni Relations and held by Prof.Dr.Ir. Ambo Tuwo, DEA.
In July 2010 the leadership of the Postgraduate Program was chaired by Prof.Dr. Ir Mursalim as Director and assisted by Prof.Dr.Ir. Ambo Tuwo, DEA as Assistant Director for Academic Affairs, Prof.Dr. Syamsul Bahri, SH, MS., as Assistant Director of Administration and Finance; While the Assistant Director for Quality Assurance, Monitoring and Evaluation, Student Development and Alumni Relations is held by Prof.dr. Veni Hadju, Ph.D.
Then since July 2014 the Postgraduate Program is chaired by Prof. Dr. Syamsul Bahri, SH, MS; assisted by Prof.Dr.dr. Suryani As\'ad, M.Sc as Assistant Director for Academic Affairs; Prof. Dr. Hamka, M.A. as Assistant Director of Administration and Finance, and Prof. Dr. Ing. Herman Parung as Assistant Director for Cooperation, Student and Alumni Development.
In April 2016 the leadership of the Postgraduate Program was chaired by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, SE, MS; assisted by Prof.Dr.dr. Suryani As'ad, M.Sc as Assistant Director for Academic Affairs; Prof. Dr. Hamka, M.A. as Assistant Director of Administration and Finance, and Prof. Dr. Ing. Herman Parung as Assistant Director for Cooperation, Student and Alumni Development.
In July 2018 the leadership of the Postgraduate Program was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ir. Jamaluddin Jompa, MSc; assisted by Prof.Dr.Ir. Laode Asrul, M.P. as Assistant Director for Academic Affairs; Prof. Dr. Hamka, M.A. as Assistant Director of Administration and Finance, and Prof. Dr. Ing. Herman Parung as Assistant Director for Cooperation, Student and Alumni Development.
After 30 years of holding Postgraduate Education at Hasanuddin University, the total alumni up to September 2018 were 2,232 doctors (Ph.D), and 23,875 Masters. The number of available study programs to date is 49 Masters (S2) study programs and 20 doctoral (S3) study programs.
